Understanding Pearl Types & How to Tell if They’re Genuine

Pearls have captivated people for centuries with their soft glow and timeless elegance. But not all pearls are the same, and knowing what makes each type unique helps you choose with confidence.

Cultured primarily in Japan and Vietnam.

How to Tell if a Pearl Is Genuine or Fake

1. The “Tooth Test”
Gently rub the pearl against your front teeth.
Genuine pearls feel slightly gritty or sandy — this comes from their natural nacre layers.
Fake pearls feel smooth like plastic or glass.

2. Look at the Surface
Real pearls have tiny natural imperfections and variations in their shine.
Imitation pearls often look too perfect, too shiny or identical to each other.

3. Check the Weight
Real pearls tend to feel heavier for their size.
Fake pearls made of plastic or resin feel light.
4. Temperature Test
Genuine pearls feel cool when you first touch them and warm up slowly.
Fake pearls usually stay at room temperature from the start.

5. Drill Hole Inspection
If you can see the drill hole:
Real pearls show natural layering around the hole.
Fake pearls may show chipping, bubbling or peeling around the coating.

6.Shape Consistency
Genuine pearls rarely match 100% perfectly.
If every pearl is exactly identical in size and shape, it's often a sign they're man-made.
